Here are all the generations of mustangs, probably the base models, ordered by weight, and the GTs usually weigh about 100-200 lbs more. I hope you can see that they aren't that heavy.

1964.5-1966: 2,445 lbs

1979-1982: 2,550 lbs

1983-1986: 2,568 lbs

1974-1978: 2,712 lbs

1987-1993: 2,754 lbs

1967-1968: 2,758 lbs

1994-1998: 3,055 lbs

1999-2004: 3,069 lbs

1969-1970: 3,122 lbs

2005-2009: 3,350 lbs

2010-present: 3,401 lbs

1971-1973: 3,560 lbs

Besides, mustangs are part cruiser, part GT. They weren't made to be miatas although they can definitely be turned into something along those lines. The same goes for building a mustang into a dragster, or a leather-clad open-top cruiser, or a drift machine: one of the longest made cars has one of the biggest and easily accessed aftermarkets. You should never take a mustang at face value and I would argue weight is irrelevant up to a certain point. Heck, I could shed 50 lbs in my '07 if I swapped out my seats and another 50 if I take out the full sized spare, jack and trunk floor mat (which I do for auto-cross). With wide rubber, tower bracing and thick sway bars, my 3400 lb mustang doesn't even roll or squeal while getting thrown into corners. I'll admit, I love old and light cars, but they're nowhere near as safe or technologically advanced or comfortable as today's "heavy" cars. If you ask me, there isn't a better street car out there.

I think you misunderstood me.

I was referring to GT only, for the V8 sound we all love, but I couldn't live with it daily - I like light and tossable too much to not try to turn it into something it isn't.

to each his own I guess. I used to own a mkII supra and drove a NA miata for a while and, while they're ok cars, their shortcomings weren't worth it for me. Just goes to show there's no point in trying to convince someone what they should like.
